The aim: to increase and encourage access to the contemporary arts in a fun and playful way via the building’s architectural form and interaction with the street, it’s relationship within the local context of railway bridges, hidden access roads and through paths. A back-land site between Waterloo, London Bridge and Elephant and Castle. The entrance has been designed as a series of walls which ‘step-out' onto the pavement, suggesting connection and a route through. Offering up the notion of public access. A play with boundaries and ownership asking what is art and where does it start and to who does it belongs. By exploring the walls, paths and views into the basement you are lead into the heart of the site to a quiet courtyard hosting installations, performances and construction workshops. You are then invited to climb the industrial warehouse like structure up high: to explore the art and the views and layers of the city.
The building is designed to provide a mixture of studios, galleries and performance spaces to be used by local artists, performers, community groups and schools.
