We were appointed by City West Homes to establish a scope of building works to improve the internal environment for the residents. The iconic mix of 10 and 6 storey slab blocks designed by Lasdun and Drake architects were built in the 1950's and were designed to work with a central heating system and communal laundry but now all have individual boilers, wet clothes hanging inside to dry (laundry converted to offices) and reduced ventilation due to people painting up vents. The buildings have recently been Grade II listed.
We carried out monitoring of the internal temperatures and humidity levels in a number of flats scattered across the estate, before and after a pilot of interventions, as well as interviewing residents to discuss measures to combat serious cold, condensation and subsequent mould issues. Our study helped us understand and develop a healthy holistic package of internal and external improvements while preserving the iconic external appearance.
