We were commissioned to design a new nursery and reception for St. John’s school in Angel Town, Brixton. The building has an independent entrance and reception office with a linking access route to the school for communal events. The original school building is a single storey 1960's aluminium frame structure, with timber cladding.
The new building offers an independent character and new autonomous entrance for the nursery.
The large internal open-plan layout was designed for flexibility to allow for mixed play and learning, and was achieved using large spanning glu-lam beams. The external form and scale of the building and it's openings reflect the heights and eye lines of the children, with large ground level windows out onto the play area and a built-in bench. The building aims to make the adult occupants aware of the different perspective it’s little inhabitants have on the world as well as allowing a connection between internal and external environments.
